Hi all
We are trying to migrate 8.8 SP4 clients to 9.0 SP3. The Advance Agent (AA) deploys fine, we see the .EXE in the SDMcache folder and wait until the client appears in the 9.0 SP3 core server. However, when we deploy the AA to more clients on the same subnet, the C:\Windows\Temp\AdvanceAgent.log confirms they are all downloading the 200+ MB .EXE from the core server, not a peer as expected, and we have checked clients with the .EXE staged in their SDMcache folder are online at the time. This caused major network problems that week when we deployed to 500+ clients, so we had to cancel and delete the package and the associated AA files to prevent further download attempts from pending clients.
Any ideas why peer downloading appears not to be working please?
In the meantime, to buy us time we propose the following plan of action:-
1.DNS redirect
a.In anticipation I have already copied the shared keys and certificates from \\8.8core\c$\Program Files\LANDesk\Shared Files\Keys\ to \\9.0core\c$\Program Files (x86)\LANDesk\Shared Files\Keys (but not overwritten any files in the latter). If we don’t implement a DNS redirect then no harm done.
b.We need to change the DNS record of 8.8core to match the IP of 9.0core and reboot the 8.8core, so that any requests to 8.8core are redirected to 9.0core, including Inventory Scans.
c. Once done, the 1st Inventory scan from each machine will be a “delta” scan (i.e. partial/network scan but can still be remote controlled).
d. The 2nd Inventory scan from each machine will be a “full” (normal) scan.
This effectively imports all v8 agents into v9 which buys us time to get a working LD9 deployment that doesn’t affect network performance, etc... The only downside is that the files will still be v8 agent files so we wouldn’t be able to use any v9-only features, such as real-time inventory scanning, which we don’t use anyway.
2. LANDesk 9 deployment
a. Once all/most machines are scanned into v9, I can run a query to identify the machines that need a v9 agent upgrade then deploy the v9 agent
b. As peer download currently does not work, we will most likely split into 2 packages:-
i. Package1: Copy the 201MB v9 install EXE using the most bandwidth-friendly option “Multicast (cache only)”. This will copy the EXE to C:\Program Files\LANDesk\LDClient\sdmcache\ldlogon\AdvanceAgent\ on each machine
ii. Package2: Install the v9 EXE from the local cache (C:\Program Files\LANDesk\LDClient\sdmcache\ldlogon\AdvanceAgent\)
Do you forsee any problems with this approach? Will Remote Control work when there is only a "delta scan"?
Thanks
Scott
